This fascinating historical museum on Long Island is a Smithsonian affiliate museum. It consists of 3 types of museums - a local history museum, an American art museum and a carriage and transportation museum. The carriage museum, widely acknowledged to be the finest in the country is located in a historic carriage house and has many displays relating to transportation in the 17 and 18oos along with a large collection of historic carriages.
The majority of this Long Island historic museum is open air displays and buildings set on a 9 acre park and include a blacksmith's shop, a historic schoolhouse, barns and more where visitors can see what life was like in the 18th and 19th century on Long Island. Be sure to spend some time visiting the art collection which is made up of over 4,000 sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints. Admission is $9 per adult. Open Friday through Sunday

This Long Island historical museum has exhibits and displays made up of over 20,000 artifacts related to the history of Suffolk County. Visitors can see this impressive collection in permanent exhibits such as Early Suffolk Farm Life and the Rise of Crafts - an exhibit relating to Long Island's rural farming history; and Early Suffolk Transport - which explores all the modes of transportation early Long Islanders used.
