Situated on the western edge of the Bronx's Van Cortlandt Lake and along Tibbetts Brook is the Putnam Trail--a 1.5-mile-long trail that occupies the old rail bed of the NY Central Railroad's Putnam Division. Construction of the railroad began in 1870 and the last passenger service was in 1958. Throughout the trail, you'll see the former rail line's passages integrated into the park's landscape.
You can enter the trail in the northwest corner of a large parking lot along Van Cortlandt Park South. South of the entrance are various remnants of an old passenger platform. As you travel north, you'll cross a bridge that spans an arm of Van Cortlandt Lake. Across the lake are impressive views of the Bronx Skyline.
