New York State Capitol

New York State Capitol

One of the Finest Upstate NY Historical Sites!

Built in the late 1800s, this white granite Romanesque Revival structure is an impressive building which stands out against the Albany landscape. Home to the New York State Legislature, this beautiful building has many fascinating architectural features. Vaulted ceilings, sweeping carved staircases (one of which took 14 years to complete!) and exquisite stonework fill the building's many rooms.

This is one of the most interesting Upstate New York historical sites; be sure to visit the Flag Room, home to almost 1,000 battle flags from the War of 1812 through the Gulf War and is a memorial to all who lost their lives in these wars. Stop by the Red Room, filled with elegant decorating and architecture, the mahogany wainscoting and bronze leaf make this room truly beautiful. Guided tours of the capitol building are available Monday through Friday free of charge.
