Fort Stanwix National Monument

Fort Stanwix National Monument

Visit the US's Defense Against the North

Vital in the defense of  New York state in 1777 against the British invasion from Canada during the Revolutionary War, Fort Stanwix's victory helped bring about subsequent victories at Saratoga - a turning point in the war. This Upstate New York historical site was destroyed by fire and heavy rains in 1781. The current fort is a reconstruction on the site of the old fort and now houses nearly half a million artifacts and collections.

Admission is free to this U.S. National Monument and Fort Stanwix is open year round from 9am to 5pm except on select holidays. Visit to see artifacts, documents and exhibits which tell the story of Fort Stanwix and the history of the land and indian tribes surrounding it. You can tour the fort alone or join a ranger-led tour to hear interesting facts and history.
